Understanding FRP Roofing Standards

FRP roofing products are tested and certified to various international standards. Understanding what these standards mean helps you choose the right product for your project's fire safety, performance, and quality requirements.

Fire Safety Standards

BS 476 Part 7:1997 — Surface Spread of Flame

What it tests: The rate at which flames spread across the surface of a material.

Ratings: Class 1 (best) to Class 4 (worst). Class 1 means the material does not significantly contribute to flame spread.

Why it matters: Buildings with strict fire safety requirements (factories near fire stations, oil and gas facilities, buildings with high occupancy) often require Class 1 rated roofing materials. Space Asia's Star-Lite Series is certified to BS 476 Part 7 Class 1.

ASTM D635 — Rate of Burning of Plastics

What it tests: The rate at which plastics burn when exposed to a flame, and the extent of burning.

Ratings: Materials are classified as "self-extinguishing" or "non-self-extinguishing." Fire-retardant FRP should be self-extinguishing.

Why it matters: Indicates how the material behaves in a fire situation. Self-extinguishing materials stop burning when the flame source is removed, limiting fire spread.

Performance Standards

ISO 9050 — Light Transmission

What it tests: The percentage of visible light that passes through the material.

Why it matters: Determines how much natural daylight enters the building. Space Asia offers FRP sheets with light transmission ranging from 13% (minimal light, maximum UV protection) to 75% (maximum daylight).

Application guide:

  • 13-25%: Chemical storage, equipment rooms where UV protection is critical
  • 40-60%: Standard factories, warehouses — balanced daylight and protection
  • 65-75%: Workspaces where maximum natural light is desired

ISO 8990 — Transmittance Properties

What it tests: The thermal and luminous transmittance properties of glazing materials.

Why it matters: Helps determine how much heat enters the building along with light. Lower transmittance means better thermal insulation.
